What Is The Mind?

The Mind of Man is the most mysterious and complex entity of our being. It is also the most misunderstood, used and abused gift given to man by God. Man has longed to comprehend and understand the workings of the mind. Over the course of human history, much has been written, researched and talked about concerning the mind. Great thinkers have sat and debated the mind. Science and religion have also debated the workings of the mind. Science seeks to study the mind from experimentation and empirical analysis such as classical conditioning where data is collected, analyzed, and quantified. It also seeks to modify behavior through talk therapy by unlocking the sub-consciousness mind and to alter thinking patterns. Religion on the other hand, seeks to study the mind from a faith-based connection to that of the Creator. A lasting relationship emerges and lives are transformed by a renewing of the mind to the Word of God. Believers then begin to emulate the life of Christ.

The duality of man is a fact that we are created both spiritual and physical. We are hardwired both as physical and spiritual beings. The spiritual is related to that of the Creator which He bestowed upon man a spirit whereby he is able to commune with his Creator. When man manifests this spiritual capacity to its utmost, the world is elevated and becomes a better place. And man is also a physical being created of organisms, cells, flesh and bone. Thus man merely sees himself as an extension of the physical world. We are therefore called upon to view our existence as both independent and interdependent with the rest of nature. Physically, we possess a commonality with all other creatures; spiritually we soar far and above because of the capacity of man's superior spiritual mind. When we ignore our own spirituality, we sink below them all. This is the great paradox of man.

I owe it to you, if there is going to be any understanding of the mind, if there is going to be a renewing of the mind, if there is going to be an un-shackling of the mind, it is knowing how the mind functions from these two perspectives. It is intended to point the way toward reflective thinking and self-understanding.
